As part of their classes, students use the station to complete\u00a0authentic research projects. This work is sponsored by a grant from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward.do?AwardNumber=1044623\">National Science Foundation (NSF)<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward.do?AwardNumber=1044623\">TUES Award #1044623<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0The objective of the grant is to assess the benefits of using research as a learning tool in classes throughout the geosciences curriculum, and the basic idea of the grant is outline in the project\u00a0<a title=\"Educational Research Questions\" href=\"http:\/\/watershed-research.wcu.edu\/?page_id=70\">research questions<\/a>. Although many of the benefits of undergraduate research done by individuals have been established by\u00a0<a title=\"Literature List on the Benefits of Undergraduate Research\" href=\"http:\/\/watershed-research.wcu.edu\/?page_id=72\">others<\/a>, the NSF grant examines groups of students doing research projects of varied lengths in classes. As part of the grant, we are working on a\u00a0group model of undergraduate research in classes, assessing student benefits of completing undergraduate projects, and examining the benefits of these experiences to undergraduate mentors or\u00a0Research Fellows.
